A(nother) Request for Feedback and Suggestions

This blog has gotten a decent number of new readers so I thought I'd once again ask for feedback and suggestions.

Do you like the weekly rankings articles? Hate them? Want me to write something on a league I haven't yet?

How about the more general articles like the stats series? The weekly previews?

Any feedback, positive or negative would be appreciated. Please leave a comment below.

  1. Hi, I like the weekly ranking articles, although I'm not totally sure what the EGD stands for. I mostly follow the EPL, so it would be good to have preview/predictions before every round of matches. It's always nice to see how accurate the models are.

  2. Thanks for the comments. EGD stands for expected goal difference. It is the average goal differential if they played out a new season at the level the results have shown so far, according to the model being used. The way I calculate that is to give each team scoring and defensive numbers using the averages formula or Poisson. The numbers combine to tell me the expected number of goals for each team if any given two teams play each other so I run them against each team both home and away, add up the goals for (this is how I get the offensive ranking), goals against (use this for defensive) and their difference is the EGD. I hope that made a bit of sense.

As I've argued in the goal-differential series, that's a better and more predictive measure of team skill than something based on points.

I think most readers follow the EPL and it is the most popular league so my plan is to write a weekly EPL preview and another preview for the rest of Europe. I personally prefer the Spanish league, but I follow both as well as the others I've written about to a lesser extent.

  4. Occasional coverage from South America would be nice. For example, the Copa Sudamericana final begins next week.

I like your site, keep up the good work.
